A veteran singer in the underground Brazilian music scene, Arícia Mess, born in Rio de Janeiro, has been delighting the Brazilian critics and audience with her swing and cheerful style of dance. In her process of creation, Arícia’s music comes with an attitude that mixes the spirit of underground music with a sort of politics and social issues. Arícia had begun her professional music career in the early 90’s when she used to work with other artists. She has introduced a lot of brazilian musicians from the new generation into the brazilian music scene, as Pedro Luis, the leader of “Pedro Luis e a Parede”, band which Arícia was a cofounder. For a long period of time, all of the most famous Rio’s venues used to be crowded during her concerts. Since then, she has a special audience in all her concerts. Arícia’s first record, “Cabeça Coração”, was released in 2000 and covered all expectation of all her critics and public. In this album she recorded great hits as “Super Legal”, written by herself, and “O Homem dos Olhos de Raio-X”, written by Lenine and first released in her album. “Cabeça Coração” was enjoyed by the critics all over Europe and Japan. Today, Arícia Mess is recording her second album, which will be released in the early 2008. This second record, as her first, will be a mix of black culture and its environment. About her music influences, as African rhythm, she says, “Just when I started to listen more music about African religious, the candomblé, I understood that the rhythm I was playing was samba”. Ariícia’s music can work together with all these rhythms without being an average music. All her african influences are part of Arícia, and everything work together when she is writing a song, as she says, “I think that all this candomblé culture and music, with all its religious aspects, is a way to connect our joy and the Earth.” Through her “soul voice”, Arícia transmits in her songs feelings and passions in such a natural way that she easily goes through ritual sings and electronic beats, the mythic and the contemporaneous. Arícia searches and tries a lot of combinations to compose her music and this is why every place she goes the audience feel that they have never listened to music like that.
