bio

Biography At a recent concert, Karol overheard somebody yell out, “I feel like I’m in Ontario.” The concert was happening in Warsaw, Poland. It seems that Poland is getting a little dose of musical Canada. Nestled somewhere between North Bay, Ontario and Warsaw sit Paula and Karol, who are helping define the multinational nature of Polish and Canadian pop music. Inspired by Canadian kitchen parties, acoustic instrumentations, and music collectives while growing up in North Bay, and later Guelph, Ontario, Paula moved to Warsaw to study and a few years later met Karol. Having played in rock bands for the past 10 years, Karol had dreams of finding an Emmylou Harris to his Bob Dylan, a Laura Marling to his Noah and the Whale. Realizing their voices were so similar, they settled for a completely different sound than what was neither Dylan nor Noah. The band imported the glockenspiel, a bit of casiotone beats, a Martin guitar, clunky violin playing, word-of-mouth appeal, and positive energy to rock Warsaw at sold-out concerts. Their honest lyrics create truly pop narratives - capturing moments and relationships entangled in love, life, growth, and loss. Polish music press has dubbed them the „musical discovery of 2009“ and the „best group of 2010,“ and they were just nominated „Person of the Year“ by Warsaw’s biggest cultural newspaper. Despite existing for a little over a year, they've performed at every major music festival in Poland (Heineken Open’er Festival, Jarocin Festival, OFF Festival, Smooth Festival) as well as other alternative music festivals like the Fusion Festival in Germany or the Villa Reykjavik art festival in Iceland. They also supported such acts on tour dates in Poland such as Beirut and Basia Bulat. Right now Paula & Karol just released their full album Overshare, which was recorded in Warsaw with the help of the Warsaw-based indie label LadoABC (www.ladoabc.com), and mastered in Montreal by Harris Newman (Arcade Fire, Ohbijou, Basia Bulat). Depending on the weather, they now tour with their lovely band members, Staszek Wróbel (drums), and Krzysiek Pozarowski (bass).
